Question 1

What makes an employer an H-1B sponsor here?

Accepted Answer

It had at least one H-1B Labor Condition Application (LCA) certified by the US Department of Labor in the last three federal fiscal years. An employer must have an LCA certified before it can file an H-1B petition, so the public LCA record shows which employers sponsor. We load the Department of Labor's disclosure data, which it publishes each quarter, and check for a new release several times a day.

Question 2

Why LCAs and not USCIS approvals?

Accepted Answer

USCIS publishes approved petitions in its H-1B Employer Data Hub, but its website doesn't allow automated downloads, so we can't keep that data current. An LCA isn't an approved petition: some are never used, and an employer can file more LCAs than it hires. Treat the number as a sign of how often an employer sponsors, not as a count of H-1B workers.

Question 3

If an employer has sponsored before, will it sponsor me?

Accepted Answer

Not necessarily. Many employers sponsor only some roles, and the role has to qualify as a specialty occupation. Check the advert, and ask the employer if it isn't clear. We leave out adverts that say the role doesn't offer sponsorship or requires US citizenship.

Question 4

How does Rolebound match employers to the data?

Accepted Answer

We match each employer's name against the employer names in the Department of Labor data, once legal suffixes such as Inc., LLC, Corp., LP and PLLC are removed. We only count a match when the names agree, or when exactly one employer in the data begins with the name. Adverts from staffing agencies are never marked, because an agency's filings say nothing about the employer you would work for. Large companies often file under a different legal name from the one on their adverts, so an employer we can't match may still sponsor.

Question 5

I'm on STEM OPT. What do I need from an employer?

Accepted Answer

For the STEM OPT extension, the employer must be enrolled in E-Verify and complete a training plan with you on Form I-983. We don't have E-Verify data, so check E-Verify's employer search and talk to your school's Designated School Official (DSO).

Question 6

Is this legal advice?

Accepted Answer

No. Rolebound is a job-search tool and doesn't give immigration advice. For advice on your situation, speak to an immigration attorney or your school's DSO.

Question 7

Is it free?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Searching and filtering are free with no account. A free account lets you save jobs and tailor your resume.
