How to show skills on a resume so both the ATS and the recruiter notice

A skills section is easy to write and easy to get wrong. Listing forty tools proves nothing; leaving skills out of your bullets means the ATS may never see them. The approach that works is to name skills in one grouped section and prove the important ones in the experience bullets.

Group skills by category

Three to five categories with four to eight items each is readable and complete. For a software engineer: Languages, Backend, Data & Infrastructure. For a marketer: Strategy, Channels, Tools. For a nurse: Clinical, Systems, Certifications. Categories let a recruiter find what they need in one glance.

Match the posting's exact wording

ATS keyword matching is often literal. If the posting says 'PostgreSQL', write 'PostgreSQL', not 'Postgres'. If it says 'stakeholder management', use that phrase rather than 'working with stakeholders'. Keep a copy of the posting open while you edit.

Prove the top five in bullets

Pick the five skills the posting cares about most and make sure each appears in at least one experience bullet with an outcome: 'Built dbt models feeding a Tableau dashboard used weekly by four squads.' A skill mentioned only in a list is a claim; a skill in a bullet with a number is evidence.

Be honest about levels

Do not list a tool you have used once. Interviewers ask about anything on the page, and a weak answer on a listed skill costs more than leaving it off. If a skill is genuinely basic and relevant, label it: 'Go (basic)'.

Soft skills belong in bullets, not lists

'Communication' and 'leadership' in a skills list carry no information. 'Presented quarterly findings to the executive team' and 'led a team of three' do. Reserve the skills section for concrete, searchable terms.

Keep it current

Review the section every time you tailor a resume. Remove anything the target role does not care about; the space is better spent on the things it does.
