Using AI to write your resume without losing your voice (or your integrity)

AI writing tools are good at structure, phrasing and speed. They are bad at knowing what you actually did. Used well, they turn an afternoon of staring at a blank page into thirty minutes of editing; used badly, they produce a fluent resume that is not quite true. The difference is the workflow.

Start with facts, not prompts

Before generating anything, write a plain list of what you did in each role: projects, numbers, tools, outcomes. This is the source of truth. Give the AI these facts and ask it to draft bullets; do not ask it to 'write a resume for a marketing manager' from nothing.

Check every number and claim

Language models fill gaps confidently. If a draft says you 'increased revenue 40%' and you did not measure that, delete it. A single invented metric can end an interview process when it is questioned.

Keep your own phrasing where it is better

AI drafts tend towards the same vocabulary: 'spearheaded', 'leveraged', 'cross-functional'. Replace words you would never say. Read each bullet aloud; if it does not sound like something you would explain in an interview, rewrite it.

Use AI for the tailoring loop

The most valuable use is tailoring: given a job description and your truthful base resume, the AI reorders and rephrases to match the posting's priorities. This is tedious by hand and fast with a tool, and it does not require inventing anything.

Disclose if asked

Some employers ask whether AI was used in the application. Answer honestly: 'I used an AI tool to help with structure and wording; the content is my own.' That is an acceptable answer to almost everyone, and the alternative is a risk not worth taking.

The test

Could you defend every line of this resume in a conversation with the person who managed you? If yes, the tool did its job. If no, you have more editing to do.
